报告摘要 | Understanding catalysis, and in particular heterogeneous catalysis, has been based on the investigation of model systems. We have developed strategies to prepare such model systems based on single crystalline oxide films, which are used, both, as support materials as well as permeable covers to study reactions in confined space. In the first part, reactions in confined space relevant in catalysis using micro- and meso-porous materials are addressed. We have designed a study to investigate a simple reaction such as water formation from oxygen and hydrogen at a transition metal surface both in open and confined space to be in a position to evaluate the factors influencing the kinetics of those reactions. In the second part, surface action spectroscopy is introduced as a way to characterize the vibrational properties of surfaces. The action spectroscopy approach is based on the idea, that messen-ger species are attached to the object under investigation, and that laser light of varying frequency in the infrared is used to detach the messengers, which are detected with a mass-spectrometer. By varying the infrared frequency, one is able to record the vibrational spectrum of the object under study without having to record a reference spectrum. We have, over the last few years, made the conceptual design, developed surface action spectroscopy and reported some first results employing the Free Electron Laser installed at the Fritz-Haber Institute. |
