报告摘要 | A paper expressed in good scientific English is clear, concise, insightful, and complete. As long as the text is not plagiarized, how these qualities are attained is immaterial. Thus AI apps offer new tools that can be applied to ease and accelerate the writing process. At present, these tools may provide a highly efficient means of producing text free of spelling and grammatical errors; expression may be improved as well. The effort thus avoided instead can be applied to the task of structuring the presentation in a tight, logical sequence of statements that clearly and insightfully convey to the reader the essence of the research being described. That task remains the main duty of the human writer, and is the focus of a good deal of this presentation. By examining some examples–both good and bad, the hallmarks of good writing will be highlighted with the aim of showing how they can be incorporated to improve one’s own writing. |
报告人简介 | Prof. Edward Sharman received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from UC Berkeley 1968, PhD degree in Chemical Physics from the Univ. of Southern California. Initially worked in industry applying spectroscopic methods to the design of industrial gas monitors and controls; career change in 2000 to biomedical research as a Research Specialist, currently in the Department of Neurology at UCI; presently studying properties of cells derived from ALS patients. |
